Teachers at the Victorian Teachers' Games learning to play Gaga Ball and having a great time.

We went Gaga at the Victorian Teachers’ Games

Posted by Kellie Macpherson on

We recently packed up the car (and the kids) to head to West Gippsland for the Victorian Teachers’ Games. It was the first time that we’d sponsored this event and are thrilled that it won’t be the last - what an incredible group of educators to spend time with.

From the moment we set up our Portable Gaga Pit in VTG Central, it quickly became apparent that the competitive spirit was alive and well; the teachers at this year’s games were there to WIN. Our youngest son, Shepard, jumped in and joined the delegates in the pit as they sharpened their Gaga skills before competing in the Amazing Race activity later that day.

The race was on for Gaga Ball

The Amazing Race took participants all over Traralgon, and we welcomed 40 enthusiastic groups into our Gaga Pit. They (quite literally) had a ball taking on each other, and at times our eldest son Jethro who wasn’t shy about taking on the teachers!

One of the things we love about Gaga is that while there are official game rules, school kids will often make up their own rules too! Why? Because they are so invested in playing that they like to make it their own. It’s the intersecting space between what you can do, and what you want to do, where magic happens. Some of the groups that came through mastered the game so quickly that they then went on to ‘freestyle’ play, adding their own personal touch to the game.

Teachers squealed with delight
playing Gaga Ball

It was the first time that some teachers had experienced Gaga Ball, but whilst there were varying levels of familiarity with the game, the sentiment of seeing the value in it for school aged children resonated throughout. They particularly felt that the game's inclusive nature aligned to the values of their schools, and loved the idea of it boosting confidence and facilitating better learning outcomes in class.
