With the gaga pit buzzing every recess, lunch, and even during class breaks, it’s clear this game has made a significant impact. We spoke with PE teacher Zoe Quinsey-Monroe to find out how gaga has transformed the school’s playtime.
From Camp Favourite to School Essential
"We first came across gaga at a school camp in Waratah Bay," Zoe says. "The kids loved it so much, we knew we had to get one at our school."
As a school that follows the Berry Street Education Model and prioritises active engagement, Churchill North PS actively seeks ways to keep students moving. The idea of a gaga pit fit perfectly with their mission.
Bringing Gaga Ball to Churchill North
After learning about gaga ball, Zoe and the leadership team explored options to bring it to their school. They applied for an Active Schools Grant, and when Physical Activity Adviser Bernie Walsh visited, he enthusiastically supported the idea.
Initially, the school considered having the local high school build a pit. However, logistical challenges made it difficult. Instead, they turned to Gaga Games, which provided an easy, streamlined solution.
"It was so much more efficient to get it delivered by Gaga Games. It came in a flat pack and took just two hours for me and the handyman to assemble," says Zoe.

A Small School with a BIG Love for Gaga Ball
"The kids were off their chops! They just wanted to be in and around it," Zoe laughs. "The first few days were madness—we had to create a timetable just to manage the excitement."
To ensure fairness, the school implemented a roster system: each grade gets designated days for recess and lunch play. Grade 5/6 leaders supervise the games, ensuring students follow the rules posted on the side of the pit.
"The Grade 6 leaders have really stepped up. They take responsibility for managing the game, umpiring, and even handling any disputes. It’s been amazing to see their leadership skills grow."

Encouraging Fair Play and Inclusion
Beyond just physical activity, the gaga pit has become a valuable tool for teaching fair play and inclusivity.
"The kids see the rules, and they know they have to follow them to keep the game fun and fair," Zoe explains. "And that’s carrying over to other PE activities too. They’re playing other sports with a better understanding of fairness and rules."
Another major benefit? Inclusivity.
"Even kids who don’t usually feel confident in team sports get fully involved in gaga. It’s fast-paced, fun, and everyone gets a chance to play. It’s really helped with student confidence and engagement."
Extending the fun beyond school hours
Extending the Fun Beyond School Hours
Churchill North PS also offers after-school programs, welcoming students from various local primary schools. The gaga pit has become somewhere kids can connect and play together, regardless of which school they attend.
"It’s been a great addition to our after-school care. The kids from different schools all get in and play together—it’s a great way to build friendships and keep them active."
A Lasting Impact
By introducing a gaga pit, Churchill North Primary School has created a fun, engaging, and structured way for students to stay active, develop leadership skills, and embrace fair play.
And as Zoe puts it, "It was new, it was different—nothing like we had in the school before. The kids absolutely love it!"
